The ingredient is based on the 3S-Retinol concept: selective well-ageing, a safer option, and a natural source.

SPAIN – Provital has launched Retilance, a next-generation cosmetic active supported by advanced in vitro and in vivo research that advances retinol science for anti-ageing skin care.
Rather than simply repeating conventional retinol claims, Retilance redefines them through an approach that is more selective, safer, and better aligned with consumer needs for long-term skin health.
Retilance is an extract derived from the root of Atractylodes lancea, a plant with a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support bodily balance and vitality.
It is standardized for its total polyphenol content.
Provital spokesperson stated, “Retilance stands as a 100% natural origin (ISO 16128), Halal-certified, China- and vegan-compliant ingredient that, by reframing retinol claims through selective, safe and natural efficacy, outshines the hero to enable premium well-ageing positioning for sensitive-skin, holistic and TCM-inspired formats.”
When plant extracts were screened for RARα agonist activity, Retilance was identified as the most active candidate.
It can modulate RAR signalling without triggering the full range of retinol-related responses, reproducing the beneficial aspects of retinoid biology while avoiding the pathway associated with irritation.
The result is multidimensional radiance, working from the receptor level through to the skin’s surface.
Whole-transcriptome sequencing conducted in human dermal fibroblasts showed that Retilance replicates roughly 80% of retinol’s transcriptomic profile.
At the same time, it activates important RAR-mediated pathways involved in skin renewal and matrix regeneration.
Unlike retinol, Retilance achieves these effects without activating TRPV1, the pathway linked to irritation.
This enables a more selective retinoid-like impact on skin regeneration, antioxidant defense, and structural integrity.
Notably, Retilance produces greater expression of the genes most closely associated with collagen synthesis than retinol does.
Two clinical studies involving 113 volunteers across all skin types and tones found that 2% Retilance significantly improved firmness, elasticity, skin texture, wrinkle depth, radiance, and hydration compared with a placebo.
Visible benefits appeared from day 14, and the ingredient showed excellent tolerability, including on sensitive skin.
When compared with 0.3% retinol, Retilance delivered comparable anti-ageing performance while providing 10% greater skin radiance.
