BASF expands Alkyl Polyglucosides production capacity in Ohio

The investment reinforces the company’s standing as a leading APG supplier in the United States and further develops its manufacturing presence in the region.

USA – BASF has officially opened expanded Alkyl Polyglucosides (APGs) production capacity at its Cincinnati, Ohio, site.

First announced in 2023, the expansion improves BASF’s ability to serve customers from within North America while increasing flexibility across its worldwide production network.

It also supports growing demand for bio-based and biodegradable surfactants in the region.

Gisela Pinheiro, BASF Senior Vice President, Home Care and Industrial & Institutional Cleaning, stated, “The Cincinnati expansion represents an important step in reinforcing BASF’s leadership in the U.S. APG market.”

“Combining our broad APG portfolio and formulation expertise with expanded regional production allows us to work even more closely with customers. It strengthens our ability to support innovation and sustainability targets across a wide range of applications.”

APGs are bio-based, readily biodegradable non-ionic surfactants, as assessed under OECD 301.

They are derived entirely from natural and renewable raw materials and are known for their mildness and strong performance.

Their compatibility with other surfactants and their high performance make them highly versatile ingredients for personal care, home care, industrial and institutional cleaning, industrial formulations, and agricultural applications.

Alongside Cincinnati, BASF manufactures APGs in Düsseldorf, Germany; Jinshan, China; and Bangpakong, Thailand.

Together, these facilities create a global manufacturing network that allows the company to deliver dependable supply and respond more effectively to customer requirements in different regions.

BASF’s Care Chemicals division supplies a wide portfolio of ingredients for personal care, home care, industrial and institutional cleaning, and technical applications.

It is a leading global provider to both the cosmetics industry and the detergents and cleaners sector, supporting customers with innovative and sustainable products, solutions, and concepts.

The division’s high-performance portfolio includes surfactants, emulsifiers, polymers, emollients, chelating agents, cosmetic active ingredients, and UV filters. It operates production and development facilities across all regions and continues to expand its presence in emerging markets.

According to a report by Verified Market Reports, the global Alkyl Polyglucosides (APG) Market Revenue was valued at USD 1.2 billion in 2024 and is estimated to reach USD 1.8 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 5.2% from 2026 to 2033.

Alkyl Polyglucosides (APGs) are a fast-growing segment of the global surfactants market, driven by demand for biodegradable, plant-based ingredients in personal care, home care, and industrial cleaning products.

The largest application segments are household detergents and cleaning products, followed by personal care products such as shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, and baby care formulations.

Demand is being fueled by consumer preference for sulfate-free and environmentally friendly products, as well as stricter regulations encouraging biodegradable surfactants.
