The acquisition marks a major expansion into Ontario’s speciality paper market.

CANADA – Marcal Paper, a leading fully-integrated manufacturer of towel and tissue products, has officially completed the strategic acquisition of the St. Catharines Tissue Mill, a premium Through-Air-Dried (TAD) tissue producer, from BiOrigin Speciality Products.
The transaction brings one of the most storied papermaking operations in North America under Marcal’s umbrella, with the mill originally founded in 1912 and now operating continuously for over 110 years.
The St. Catharines facility produces high-quality TAD parent rolls essential for premium at-home and away-from-home paper towel and bath tissue products, alongside a diverse portfolio of speciality paper grades that complement Marcal’s existing capabilities.
Rob Baron, CEO of Marcal Paper, headquartered in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition, stating that St. Catharines is a remarkable asset with a remarkable team behind it, and that adding this complementary mill to Marcal’s platform represents a natural evolution for the company.
He noted that the acquisition strengthens Marcal’s ability to deliver premium tissue products customers expect, while also integrating a deeply experienced workforce and a speciality paper business with a long heritage of innovation.
The transaction strengthens Marcal’s premium tissue footprint across North America, positioning the company to better serve customers seeking high-quality TAD tissue products in both consumer and commercial markets.
The mill’s experienced workforce, including members of the Independent Paper Workers (IPW) Union, Unit 124, is joining the Marcal family as part of the acquisition.
Baron expressed pride in welcoming the St. Catharines team and committed to investing in the mill’s continued success under Marcal’s ownership.
With this acquisition, Marcal now operates nine facilities in the United States alongside the newly acquired Canadian operation, continuing its 90-year evolution from a small family-owned business near Paterson, New Jersey, into a national platform serving commercial and institutional customers across North America.
Both Marcal and St. Catharines have a long history in papermaking and are anchors in their communities, making this partnership a natural fit between companies with complementary strengths and shared values in the industry.
